TravelPlex’s Destination of the Month takes you to the Windy City, a.k.a Chicago.
Founded in 1772 by an explorer from Haiti, Chicago is today the third largest city and the third largest metropolitan area in the United States. Like many major cities, Chicago can lay claim to introducing the first of many inventions, including roller skates, the steel frame skyscraper, the Hostess Twinkie, Cracker Jacks, the elevated railway, and pinball games. It was also home to the first mail-order business – Montgomery Ward (sorry Amazon).
Chicago has earned the nickname of The Windy City as the renowned winds that whip off of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River are a constant. Regardless of the season, Chicago’s weather is as predictable as a Cubs / Cardinals score. And speaking of sports, Chicago has teams in the four major sports – baseball (White Sox); hockey (Blackhawks); basketball (Bulls) and football (da Bears).
Chicago is well known for its shopping on the Miracle Mile; restaurants; parades (over 200 per year); and tall buildings. A few things to see while in Chicago include; Navy Pier; Millennium Park; Sears Tower; Second City Comedy; The Art Institute of Chicago; and one of this writer's favorite restaurants, Ed Debevics (640 N. Wells St.). If you like being insulted while eating some pretty decent diner food, THIS is the place to go. A LOT of fun!
